First observation of isolated nuclear recoils following neutron capture for dark matter calibration
نویسندگان
چکیده
Low-energy nuclear recoils (NRs) are hard to measure because they produce few e$^{-}$/h$^+$ pairs in solids -- i.e. have low "ionization yield". A silicon detector was exposed thermal neutrons over 2.5\,live-days, probing NRs down 450\,eV. The observation of a neutron capture-induced component at energies is supported by the much-improved fit upon inclusion capture NR model. This result shows that calibration very recoil energy promising for dark matter searches, coherent neutrino experiments, and improving understanding ionization dynamics solids.

Design and Characterization of a Neutron Calibration Facility for the Study of sub-keV Nuclear Recoils
As part of an experimental effort to demonstrate sensitivity in a large-mass detector to the ultra-low energy recoils expected from coherent neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering, we have designed and built a highly monochromatic 24 keV neutron beam at the Kansas State University Triga Mark-II reactor. The beam characteristics were chosen so as to mimic the soft recoil energies expected from reac...
متن کاملScintillation efficiency of nuclear recoils in a CaF2(Eu) crystal for dark matter search
The scintillation efficiency (quenching factor) of fluorine and calcium nuclei recoiling in a CaF2(Eu) crystal was measured in an energy region relevant to dark matter searches. The recoiling nuclei were obtained via the 19F(n,n’) and 40Ca(n,n’) reactions, where the neutron beam was provided via the d(d,n)3He reaction. The quenching factor of F and Ca nuclei in the CaF2(Eu) crystal was found to...
متن کاملEnhancement of dark matter capture by neutron stars in binary systems.
We study the capture of dark matter particles by neutron stars in close binary systems. By performing a direct numerical simulation, we find that there is a sizable amplification of the rate of dark matter capture by each of the companions. In the case of the binary pulsar PSR J1906+0746 with the orbital period of 4 hours the amplification factor is approximately equal to 3.5. This amplificatio...
متن کاملMeasurements of anisotropic scintillation efficiency for carbon recoils in a stilbene crystal for dark matter detection
It is known that scintillation efficiency of organic single crystals depends on the direction of nuclear recoils relative to crystallographic axes. This property could be applied to the directional WIMP dark matter detector. The scintillation efficiency of carbon recoils in a stilbene crystal was measured for recoil energies of 30 keV to 1 MeV using neutrons from Li(p,n)Be and Cf. Anisotropic r...
متن کاملNeutron beam test of CsI crystal for dark matter search
We have studied the response of Tl-doped and Na-doped CsI crystals to nuclear recoils and γ’s below 10 keV. The response of CsI crystals to nuclear recoil was studied with mono-energetic neutrons produced by the H(p,n)He reaction. This was compared to the response to Compton electrons scattered by 662 keV γ-ray. Pulse shape discrimination between the response to these γ’s and nuclear recoils wa...
